چکیده

This paper constructs a life-cycle model with intergenerational linkages to study wealth transfers between parents and children. Households are subject to stochastic earnings, and parents care about their children. While the parents are of working age, the utility of the children’s consumption enters the utility of the parents. In addition, when they die, parents like to leave bequests to their children, and have an (exogenous) warm-glow utility from leaving a bequest. The paper studies how a borrowing constraint influences parental transfers. A tightening of borrowing constraints (that prevent children from borrowing to smooth their consumption) tends to generate larger inter vivos transfers early in life (relative to bequests). This matches the empirical evidence from Korea (a stricter constraints country) and the US. The paper also studies how transfers are impacted by allowing children to use parental wealth as collateral to borrow, and by different taxes. Borrowing constraints also have implications on the wealth distribution as a tighter borrowing constraint implies a drop in the Gini coefficient of wealth. JEL classification : D52, D91, E21

Tough Love, Intergenerational Altruism, and Worldviews

This paper discusses the tough love model of intergenerational altruism we developed and some of on-going empirical research on tough love behavior in survey data collected in Japan and United States. The tough love model modifies the Barro-Becker standard altruism model in two ways. First, the child’s discount factor is endogenously determined, so that low consumption at young age leads to a h...

Rochester Tough Love and Intergenerational Altruism

This paper develops and studies a tough love model of intergenerational altruism. We model tough love by modifying the Barro-Becker standard altruism model in two ways. First, the child’s discount factor is endogenously determined, so that low consumption at young age leads to a higher discount factor later in her life. Second, the parent evaluates the child’s lifetime utility with a constant h...

Second, the parent evaluates the child’s life time utility with a c...

Social Security Reform with Impure Intergenerational Altruism∗

This paper studies the long-run aggregate and welfare effects of eliminating Social Security in a quantitative dynamic general equilibrium life-cycle model where parents and their children are linked by voluntary and accidental bequests. Social security in this model with impure altruism has a smaller effect on capital accumulation than in a pure life-cycle model, a bigger effect than in a mode...
